Finding Cheap Auto Insurance for Young Drivers

young driverYoung drivers are usually faced with the tough task of finding cheap auto insurance rates. Due to the lack of driving experience, insurance companies look at the inexperience as a higher risk; therefore, charging high premiums.

A driver with a few years of driving experience can demonstrate their driving history as proof that they’re good drivers, or in some cases bad drivers. Price breaks usually come within three years of driving experience since it establishes a complete driving history.

If a young driver reaches three years, they usually will qualify for a good driver discount if the do not have more than one or two violations or any at-fault accidents at all. If they do have accidents, and there weren’t at fault or there were no injuries, be sure to properly list the accident to avoid paying higher rates.

If a young driver has not accumulated three years of driving experience, there are a few ways of getting the cheapest possible rates. Taking advantage of discounts such as good student discounts (B or better grade point average) or low mileage discounts (if a driver does not commute much), can also help lower premiums.

If a young driver resides with his or her parents, it will usually be cheaper to include the youth into the parent’s auto insurance policy as an additional driver vs. having them open a policy independently; however, if that’s not an option, the best thing to do is to find a carrier that’s going to offer the youth the best rate possible.

Some carriers, if they have had good loss ratios (a low amount of claims) within the young inexperienced drivers, will offer cheap rates. Instead of contacting companies individually for rates, one can log onto websites such as http://www.onlineautoinsurance.com to instantly get multiple auto insurance quotes from a variety of companies to find cheap auto insurance online. One can complete one quick questionnaire and get up to four rates from fifteen leading carriers. Once you find the carrier offering the reasonable rates, you have the option to buy auto insurance online.

As an independent insurance agent I can tell you there are some companies who are better with young driver's than others. But it always is good to shop around. I would encourage parents to keep kids on policies as long as legally possible to maximize discounts.

With young drivers it is especially easy to save hundreds of dollars by shopping around. Some companies like young drivers and some make it obvious they don't with the price.
