Budget Car Insurance - Keeping it Affordable

budget car insurance onlineSince having auto insurance in most US states is mandatory, drivers have to budget their finances in order to maintain their vehicles insured. Budget car insurance is what one would need if they are on a restricted budget.

Most states have a minimum coverage requirement ranging from liability coverage only to additional coverage such as uninsured motorist and/or no fault coverage.

The first step to finding budget car insurance would be to find out what coverage your state laws require. Most likely, you’re already aware of your particular state’s requirements.

If you are on a budget, you most likely are looking for the minimum coverage which will be the most affordable. Keep in mind that having minimum coverage may be easy on the wallet but when it comes down to having an accident, you may be left in a difficult situation.

For example, having liability coverage only would cover injuries and property damages to others up to the policy limits but will not cover your medical and/or property (your vehicle) in case of an accident.

With that in mind, there are a few tips to make sure that having auto insurance is within your budget.

  • Take advantage of all available discounts by providing accurate and complete data for all drivers and vehicles.
  • If you do go with comprehensive and collision coverage which covers damages to your own vehicle, you can choose to have higher deductibles which will help make your premium more affordable.
  • Try to place all household vehicles in the same policy so that you may get the multi-vehicle discount.
  • If you can, pay your policy term in full. For example, if your policy is a six month policy, pay all six months up front, that’ll give you a paid-in-full discount. You can also allow you auto insurance company to automatically withdraw your monthly premium payments directly from your checking account in order to save a few bucks a month in billing fees. Ask you company about EFT installments.
  • Mention any alarm or Low Jack device your vehicle may have. Other standard safety features you vehicle may have will automatically generate a discount.
  • If you have an accident on your record, make sure that all correct details are disclosed. If the accident was not your fault, you shouldn’t be charged for it. If there weren’t any injuries, it will reduce your costs. Additionally, if the damages caused in the accident were under $750, some companies will not raise your premium since the payouts were low.

Shopping around for budget car insurance rates is the single most valuable advice one can receive. Some companies will charge more for the exact same coverage as another company would.

Be cautious when buying insurance online, especially if they don't ask you for your drivers license number for auto insurance, because that won't generate an accurate quote. Without your drivers license number, they cannot track your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) and auto insurance rates are based on your driving record. Therefore, if you get a quote without your DL#, then it may be subject to change if you have tickets, violations and/or claims in the past 3 years. You are always better to use a local, licensed insurance agent in town who can write your insurance and give face to face advice using the same companies listed here. You also get better customer service when you need it, rather than trying to deal with someone over the phone, 3 states away. I have found most times that the agents get better, more accurate rates than what is offered online anyway. Also, make sure you are quoted good limits of liability. Many times when you are dealing with an unlicensed "quote-professional" over the phone or online, they quote you state minimum (or near) limits, and if you cause an accident and your policy limits don't cover the damages, your wages can be garnished and your assets can be liquidated in order to pay for the other person(s) damages, either bodily injury or property. Don't always shop by price - remember, you need good customer service, good company reputation, and someone who will take care of you when you are in need at claim-time.

    Hope this helps.
